HomeServices is an information directory for household service providers. We were given the task of designing the site, and ensuring it was attractive and easy to use. We consulted with the website owner during the entire design process to ensure that the website met her needs. Below are selected pages from the website to illustrate the design process and the thought that goes into creating a site.
Front page
From the moment a visitor first visits the site, it needs to be apparent what it is, and how to use it. The home page is very simple, showing a list of categories for which there are listings. This ensures that the visitor is able to accomplish their goal, namely getting information, quickly and without distractions.
Category listing
When a visitor clicks on a category heading, they are presented with a listing of different service providers in the area they specify when they first visit the site. Once again, a clean, simple design with clearly labelled options makes it accessible and easy to use. Actions that the visitor can perform are illustrated with a simple icon and coloured label to make clear its function.
Individual listing
When the user clicks on a listing, a new page opens with all the service providers details. The entire process from start to finish only involves three clicks, making it simple and easy to understand for even a first time user. Details are presented in an organised fashion to assist users in finding what they need.
Adminstration front page
The administrative section of the site is to ease administration of the website. Each option is clearly labelled and facilitates easy access to the tools the website administrator needs to perform day to day tasks. This allows quick, through-the-web access to everything the administrator needs.
Company administration
When an administrator clicks on an option in the menu shown above, a new page presenting individual options opens. The section is designed to allow the administrator to easily add and remove listings, as well as find out information about the listing. The menu on the side allows one to easily navigate back to the main page or to the other sections of the site.
